Days of Rapture

No one knew that the day would come. The day they call "Rapture". The term was supposedly when all the good little Christians would follow their beloved Jesus into heaven. It turns out that it wasn't just the Christians it was everyone that followed one the good guys religions. I know what it feels like to be left behind. What it feels like to know your one of the few humans in the world that well the easy way to put it is "screwed up". We've banded together in order to survive. Yea if only it was that easy. Because the simple fact is there are others out there that are out for their survival and they won't stop at anything to make sure they get it. I'm sending out this call for any that would like to join us. We need your assistance or we might all just perish.

Tobias sat on the hood of a rusted out car. He had lost his last group to bandits and once again it seems he got away. He sat there looking out onto the streets of an abandoned city. He wondered how it had got like that in only two years. Was it the god's way of proving themselves to the rest of the living. Haven't they had enough of that! He punched the hood of the car and moved on looking for water and food. Those live giving things seemed to be getting harder and harder to find.

Hailie moved from room to room in the apartment complex. She only checked the open ones, not wanting any confrontations if someone was in the room. Rifle raised she slowly moved into the next room checking where she could for anyone. Once it was clear she checked the cabinets hoping to find some food left behind. "Nothing." she grunted under her breath slamming her fists onto the counter. Footsteps above startled her and she moved quickly to check the hall and leave. She was alone and wanted to avoid people as much as she could.

Once out of the apartments she looked around the street. She knew there was a hotel down the road a little, 3 months ago she had grabbed a weeks worth of food in the breakfast area. Most had went bad but some things she had found were still good. She wondered now what she could find in the back. It was her only option right now, so she moved along in the shadows. Her jacket pushed behind her as she moved. It was warm out but she would rather wear the dark colored coat them have her white skin nearly glow in the shadows.

Tobias walked on checking his radio every once in while. He'd picked up this habit because local militia's and sometimes bandits would use them for communication. For now it seemed the coast was clear, but all that was likely to change any moment. In the distance he saw a large hotel. They always seemed to have some scraps left over inside. On the downside you never knew who was using them as a base camp. Checking to make his shotgun was loaded and safety off he headed in the hotel's direction. "Might as well get this over with" Tobias said as he walked up the middle of road.

She turned to check behind her before she stepped inside the hotel. A dark haired figured was in her sight walking down the middle of the road. Quickly she slipped inside. She checked around and found the room behind the registration desk would be the best place to hide at the moment. Hoping the other person did not see her she laid herself flat against the floor and watched the door, gun pointed at it and finger ready to pull. Her black hair was held back by a bandanna so it didn't curtain around her face. the cross that hung for a leather string whacked her in the chest bone from her quick movements. It was however the only movement right now. After she stuck it inside her shirt, everything was still.

He reached the hotel crouching down along the wall till he got to the door. Counting to three in his head he turned into the doorway quickly his finger on the trigger of his shotgun. Something didn't feel right here. Looking down on the floor he noticed foot prints in the layer of dust. "So I guess this is the part where either you shoot me or show yourself". With his eyes he followed to foot prints to the main desk and aimed his shotgun in its direction. Who ever it was would of shot him already if they were just planning on robbing him. Something was different about this chance encounter.

Shoot him or show herself, Hailie really didn't want either. She could have slapped herself now for in her hurry she forgot one main thing, footprints. His gun was pointed at the counter but she knew he could not see her since he told her to show herself. Slowly with a sigh and her gun still pointed at the boy she stood and stepped around the door frame. Finger still on the trigger and breathing shallow she sighed. "I don't care what you are here, just leave if you mean no harm to me and I will not harm you. The cross had slid out of the tang top she was wearing and bounced against her chest again. Her bother's aviator jacket was a little large on her, but not enough to get in her way. In a way the coat made her stronger...

She set her finger on the trigger now waiting for the boy. Her green eyes were still on his face. If he was going to shoot her oh well, but if she could help it he would be the one shot.

Tobias watched as the young woman came out from behind the desk. She was better looking then most of the people he came across. Slowly he put his weapon down but keep his hand close enough to one of his hidden pistols to make himself feel a little bit better. "Okay since neither one of feels like dying today how about you take the bottom floors and I'll take the top floors? If I find more then I need I'll leave by the steps for you." He didn't know if this tactic would work but he sure as hell hoped it did. The thought of anything edible sent his stomach into a growl. He stared directly into her eyes awaiting her answer.

Hailie's stomach seemed to answer his with its own grumbling. This just made her tense more at his suggestion, if both hands were not needed on the rifle she would have had on around the handle of the knife attached to her arm. The thought of another person in the building with her and knowing she was there was worse then not knowing if anyone was there.
"Sorry but I am not to keen on that idea." she said letting her finger off the rifles trigger a little "I cleaned out this same hotel a few months ago," that was not all a lie but she would much rather have him leave, "I am not here for food." Now that was a lie... She had not eaten since the day before last and her stomach let out another large growl letting the boy know it was a lie. Right now, she could have screamed.

Tobias smiled "Well in that case I'll be taking my leave" he turned and walked out the door hearing the familiar caw of a crow above. Bringing his shotgun up he sighted in the crow and took his shot. The sound of the gunfire fulled the block as the crow fell to the ground. "They always told me those fuckers taste like chicken" he said to himself as he walked over to the dead bird. The truth was you had to take what you could whenever you could. He put the bloody crow into his bag and moved on down the street. Looking for the next best place for food. He had a feeling the girl would be by soon enough.

She watched the boy turn and leave. 'That was weirdly easy...' The gunshot outside didn't make her jump, but she flinched a little. More out of worry that the boy had shot himself, she hated suicide it was the weak's way out. The boy hadn't looked week but all the same she was full of wonder and made her way to the door to check. She saw him walking farther down the street, a descent size blood puddle on the ground. She wondered what he shot but shrugged and went back inside.
Through the back door and to the kitchen where the staff of the hotel would have once made the warm breakfast food for the bar outside, Hailie looked around for anything that may be editable. Knowing everything in the fridge would be bad, she opened it anyway. The smell of gross curdled milk hit her right away and gagging she slammed the door shut. After a few cabinets she found what they must have stocked the vending machines with. Twinkies, Poptarts, little boxes of cereal among other snake cakes and other things that had a long shelf life. While they were not great for you, they would make her last till something better was found.
Haili swung the back-pack off, then slid the large military issue sack off her shoulder. Both were huge and could hold basically everything she had found. Stuffing one bag full she looked through a few more cabinets and draws. A few more down she found drink mixes that were add water only. With a happy leap she swooped those all up and shoved them into the already full bag.

"Jackpot!" she nearly yelled. In a cabinet beside the drink mixes she found instant noodle cups. With both bags almost over flowing she pulled them back over her shoulders and started to hunt down the street for a place to spend the night.

Tobias camped out in an old McDonald's playpen. the fence around the outside and the one entrance made it great place to set up camp. After making a fire for the evening with half rotted picnic tables and tables from the inside he cooked his meal. The smell of the crow was almost as appetizing as rotted carcass but it was better then nothing. He produced a canteen from his bad and a MRE military meal. What few rations he had were coming to an end. He sat back against an old slide looked up at the sky. It was getting dark fast and the creatures of the night would be coming to the smell of food. It looked like he might be busy tonight. Pulling the cooked crow off of the stick he took a bite and had to resist the urge to spit it out. "Tastes like chicken huh? Well fuck that" Placing the headphones he kept in his jacket pocket he turned on his MP3 player. "Only one bar left damn" it looked like he'd have to find a generator tomorrow or risk losing what sanity he had left.

Hailie's head shot up at the smell of fire and... rotted carcass? She look around and stared at the smoke coming from an old McDonald's. She made a note to stay away, until the familiar figure of the boy from before shown beside the fire that had now come in to view. She stopped and stared for a minute before choosing to talk to him. He had picked the best place to camp in a way, and she could help him out with food she figured. The boy had left right away and didn't try to harm her, in fact he had dropped his weapon. She sighed and started towards the play place.

"Ummmm... Hello?" she asked with her hand on the rifles hilt. She could spin it fast enough if he reacted with his to her. She missed a human companion and wondered if it was safe to trust anyone now that her family was gone.

Tobias looked up at the girl he had seen earlier. Placing his MRE down on the ground he sat up a little higher as to reach his weapons if he had to. "What a pleasant surprise. To whom do I owe the honor?" he said with a smirk on his face. Human interaction was a rarity these days and coming across a woman that would even talk to a man was rarer yet. For the time being he decided he would trust this girl but only time would tell if he made the decision. "You can take a seat if you like I'm not going to bite" .

She watched him and pulled her own weapon to her chest, only holding it there not aiming. She didn't know about men, the only she had been around were her brothers and then the only others since then were the ones that had killed and raped her sister. Almost got her too... She sighed, he seemed ok and she was not a little doll like most would think. She figured she could stand her own if he did try anything.

"Out here or in there?" she asked pointing beside him. He waved her inside and she walked around the fence and opened the gate. She sat a little bit away from him. "Name is Hailie.." she leaned over and held her hand out, trusting him enough for a hand shake.

"Sorry about earlier, guess we all are just a little on edge and that. Everyone has been through different fucked up shit." she looked around the play-place and let her bags onto the ground.

He looked over to Hailie "Why be sorry it's not like anyone else in these god forsaken place is" He could hear the distant howl of a wolf outside the city. Closing his eyes and allowing himself to relax a little bit in the heat of the fire. "So why are you traveling alone? It hasn't been safe to do that for years" he forgoing mentioning that she was a woman in a sick man's world.

The fire crackled and popped at his feet slowly burning its self out as he returned back to his MRE. For now it seemed his hunger would be taken care of but in the end it would destroy what was left of his sanity.

Her eyes found their way back to the boys face. Unlike most of the people she had came across, outside of her family, he was nice looking. Most people had gone to waste by now. Only hanging on by tiny bits of strength. Others didn't bother with hygiene or looks. The latter Hailie didn't worry about, she had been wearing the same few outfits she had for over a year now. Hygiene how ever was a different story. Hailie found her self going out of her way to clean herself and her things most of the time. It was one of the only things that kept her sane. Music, books, and being clean were right after food and breathing on her priority list.
"Sometimes traveling with others isn't the safest either. I have made it by myself without an incident longer then I did traveling with others." Those those 'others' were her now gone family. The boy didn't need to know that though. She turned and grabbed a hand full of breakfast bars and chucked them at the boy. "There, those things might keep you alive. But they make going to the bathroom a task.." she nodded to the MRE. She had a few herself in her bag, but between the taste and the after effects, she made them emergency only.
"Wonder if we can find something to boil some water in, in there." she jerked her head towards the McDonald's and held up one of her canteens. "Only have half left in here, others are empty. Figure these would be a nice change when resting." she held up a few of the single bottle drink mixes she had found earlier. Nothing was better for water, but a little taste would be nice now and then. She could probably even make a hand full of them last over a month since they didn't need sugar.

Nadira sat perfectly still as she waited for her prey to come out of hiding. The city behind her stunk worse than anything the country could produce, there was no way she would walk into it. She waited patiently, her training keeping her perfectly calm as he mind went blank. A small rabbit hopped out of hiding finally, sniffed the ground just outside it's little burrow, still Nadira waited. Finally it got braver, moved further away from the home it had made. As it moved away from the burrow Nadira cocked the gun and let out a quiet breath. She squeezed the trigger.

Her shot was perfect, taking the rabbit in the head, killing it instantly. She waited another moment then stood, shaking off the leaves and branches she had used to hide herself. Picking up the rabbit she looked it over and sneered. Living off the land was much easier than trying to scavenge the cities. Out here there were no bandits to be afraid of, just the dangerous animals. Not like Nadira worried about bandits, she was well trained to handle attackers. Probably better than most.

Fingering her necklaces she carried the rabbit back to her camp and started a fire. Quickly she skinned and cleaned the rabbit before putting it on a stick and turning it occasionly to cook. Sighed she leaned back against a tree and picked up one of the necklaces. It had dog tags on it, military issue, but next to it was small cross, it was Harvir's set. Her heart ahced again as she thought about Harvir as anger flared up against the Christian God for abandonning Harvir to this hell hole.

'At least I can eat right...' She thought to herself as she tucked the tags away with her own. 'I don't have to scavenge like nearly every other human left in this hell on earth.'

Tobias reached out and scooped the breakfast bars into his pack. For boiling water he had a same pot in in his pack along with the canteen he used to untreated water. Reaching inside he pulled them out and looked around for more burnable materials that wouldn't be toxic for them. "If you have some water I'll let you use this if not then you can try your luck inside". He was sure that if she's made it this long she must of learned food joints were just a raided out husk of their former glory. Then again it didn't hurt to be curious. He had already scouted this location for traps. The worst of their worries was wild animals but anyone these days could take out something or someone. Getting up to his feet he motioned towards the McDonald's "I need some wood from inside there anyways so go ahead and check it out". Not caring on whether she listened or not he headed towards the building.
